The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Babeș-Bolyai University and the Tiberiu Popoviciu Institute of Numerical Analysis cordially invite you to attend the commemorative session dedicated to Professor Dumitru V. Ionescu, organized on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of his birth.
The event will take place on June 16, 2026, at 12:00 PM, in the Tiberiu Popoviciu Amphitheater (Room 5/I), Central Building of Babeș-Bolyai University.
A mathematician with a doctorate from the Sorbonne and with internationally recognized results, D.V. Ionescu was a professor at Babeş-Bolyai University (dean, 1941-1945, head of the Department of Differential Equations at the Faculty of Mathematics, 1955-1971) and head of the sector at the Institute of Numerical Analysis, ICTP (from its establishment in 1951 until its reorganization in 1975). Also, between 1949-1955 he served as the head of the newly founded Department of Mathematics at the Polytechnical Institute.
He obtained numerous results in the field of theory and numerical methods for differential equations (the ϕ function method is a remarkable result), of numerical quadratures (he published the first monograph in the country in this field), in that of divided differences (also with the first published monograph), of functional equations and in the fixed point theory and participated in the completion of numerous research contracts at the Institute.
He was awarded in 1963 by the Ministry of Education for outstanding scientific activity, and in 1963 he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor of the Socialist Republic of Romania. In 1980 he won the “Gh. Lazăr” prize of the Romanian Academy for the monograph Divided Differences.
He is one of the pillars of the Cluj team on Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory, training numerous doctoral students and young mathematicians.
